Introduction of Silvanus
Tree Nursery
Silvanus
Tree Nursery with its 23-year-old past is currently one of
the most significant tree nurseries in Hungary.
The centre of our tree nursery operates in Northwesten Hungary,
near Lake Fertő and the town of Sopron next to the Austrian
border, with a production area of 100 hectares.
Mr.
Jenő Németh, the owner of the company started the tree
nursery production in 1980, as a private undertaker. He reproducted
grew sold evergreens and deciduous ornamental plants in the
garden of their own house.
Soon it was proved that top-quality ornamental plants are
always marketable among the customers, so due to the business
successes it bekame possible to expand the undertaking, which
grown out of the garden of the house by this time and was
gradually increased by the produktion of newplant species.
The present biggest production plant of the tree nursery can
be found in Kistölgyfapuszta, near to Kapuvar, located in
the Fertő-Hanság National Park.
Silvanus
Tree Nursery, by the vocational guidance of Mr. Jenő Németh,
developed into one ot the most significant tree nurseries
in Hungary, as we always kept in view providing the best possible
quality for our costumers, following the claims of the buyer's
market.
Besides our tree nursery gained a significant European reputation
as well, which is shown by the considereble from the export-import
business turnover concerning all regions of Europe. The export
turnover reaches as high as 35 % of the total turnover. Our
most important Hungarian trading partners includes local government,
landscape companies and horticultural retail shops.
In order to arrange the wholesale trade the tree nursery established
an association for sale named HungaroPlant in the spring in
1998.
We regularly participate in Hungarian as well as high-standard
European horticultural shows, where working in Silvanus Tree
Nursery has been rewarded several times. For example we won
international medal for our outstanding business activity
in Madrid, in 1990.
In 1992,
on Plantarium '92 International Exhibition in Holland we won
Big Silver Medal for Taxus baccata (yew tree) Conica" cultivar.
In 1993, on IGA Exhibition in Stuttgart we were awarded 4
extra prizes.
In addition, an intensive breeding project is in progress
in Silvanus Tree Nursery, which aimes selection of clones
of high biological value, which having good tolerance and
intensive ornamental value, could surpass the other species.
Corylus colurna 'Silvanus Purple' (Turkish hazel) is a new
cultivar, which does not lose its intensive red leaf-colour
during summer.
There is a forestry and tree nursery stock-plantation in Silvanus
Tree Nursery, which consists of oak-clones and clone mixtures
with high genetic value. Employees of our tree nursery worked
out a technology for propagation and production, which promotes
production of top-quality climbers.
We took part in the propagation and cultivation of ship-mast
black locust and other forestry and tree nursery plants with
mycorrhisotic connection. Currently we are also taking part
in a research aiming working out of an environmentallz-friendly
technology, which would protects water quality of Lake Balaton
(the biggest fresh water lake of Central Europe).
Two richly illustrated, popular book written on a high professional
standard were also published under the editorship of Silvanus
Tree Nursery. The one entitled "Ornamental trees and gardens
in pictures" demonstrates tree nursery ornamental plants,
helping customers the to make their choice of the right plants
this way. The one entitled "Harmonic garden" helps customers
under proper life conditions place the chosen plants.
In addition to tree nursery production, Silvanus Tree Nursery
pays a big attention to that the sale of the plants should
be performed on a high standard environment. In Budapest,
the capital of Hungary, garden-lovers can buy in four, uniformly
designed Silvanus horticultural shops, but, retail-dealers
also sell Silvanus plants with pleasure in many tree nursery
shops all over the country, of course. 25 % of the produced
plants are sold in our own tree nursery shops.
In addition to the tree nursery production and sale we also
provide garden design and landscape-gardening service, which
is available in Silvanus Landscape-gardening Workshop.
On Silvanus production plant - in accordance with the market
conditions - production of re-planted, extra-sized evergreens,
pines and ornamental shrubs was also started. There is a lack
of these solitary, re-planted plants on the EU-markets as
well, so the demand will prospectively be great. Production
of plants planted in iron baskets, in crates made of popular
lathes or in wicker baskets in the last period of cultivation
helps promote better development . The plant must be planted
with the cover holding its root system, which rapidly decomposes
in the soil. Therefore taking root of plants planted without
disturbing their root system will be prospectively 100 %.
At the cultivation of solitary plants those, which well adapt
themselves to the European climate are specially stressed.
This is case with Picea pungens, Picea pungens Glauca, Picea
omorika, Thuja occidentalis Smaragd, Forsythia x intermedia,
Philadelphus sp., Deutzia scabra, Spiraea sp. species and
cultivars.
Production of solitary shrubs is also important, because consumer
demand has remarkably changed. In addition to the evergreens,
shrubs decorating with foliage and with inflorescence have
become also very imoprtant. So it is easier to follow the
changes of seasons in the ornamental gardens and they adapt
themselves more harmoniously to the natural environment than
many exota evergreens. Our new activity is production of extra-sized
line-trees of species and cultivars, which well tolerate contaminated
soil and air of large European cities, c.g. Acer, Fraxinus
and Celtis species and cultivars. Environmentalists all over
the world also push spread of foliaged plants.
The aim of Silvanus Tree Nursery is to draw more and more
species and cultivars into the cultivation of solitary plants
and to use a production technology providing plantation of
these big plants in any period of the year. So the user of
the plant can possess a functioning garden with great ornamental
value in a short time.
